Excerpt

This book is part of the "Reference Guides to State History and Research" series. The guides, especially this one for Texas, are testimony to the vibrant and active state historical communities. Texas, which recently celebrated its sesquicentennial of independence from Mexico, has a long tradition of historical awareness. The practice of historical writing in the state dates back to the Spanish colonial period. There are today numerous examples of a widespread interest in the history of Texas. The Texas State Historical Association is the oldest learned society in this region of the United States. Almost four dozen colleges and universities in Texas regularly offer courses in Texas history. There are hundreds of regional, county, and civic historical associations and organizations scattered throughout Texas. Yet in spite of this interest, no concise historigraphical and archival guide to the history of the state exists.

We hope that this book meets that need. It contains two types of articles: in part one, historiographical essays that note important items in the published literature, and in part two, descriptions of major archival repositories. The first category of essays defines issues, problems, and opportunities while providing overviews of the major works of history dealing with the state. The second group provides basic information to those planning an initial research trip to a particular archival repository. A Guide to the History of Texas, however, makes no claim to comprehensiveness, especially since space limitations imposed strict limits on the number and length of the chapters. This book is not directed to specialized scholars actively conducting research on detailed topics. Instead it has been assembled for the use of general students and beginning researchers. It should be considered as a starting point for research in Texas history rather than as a definitive treatment of any particular historical topic or archive.
