The purpose of this book is to collect under one cover a set of studies and essays that represent the best work being done in the area of qualitative research in early childhood settings. Early childhood takes in children from birth to about age eight, and research in this area involves studies of young children in educational contexts and a variety of day care and preschool settings. Traditionally, research in early childhood has been dominated by quantitative approaches with roots in developmental and behavioral psychology. Over the past decade, qualitative methods have been more widely used and accepted, and interest in qualitative approaches has grown rapidly. This book presents reports of research and discussions of methods, ethics, and theory building by scholars who are leading the way as new directions in early childhood research are being charted.

This project has its roots in a conference on Qualitative Studies in Early Childhood Contexts that I organized at the University of Tennessee in 1989. the conference attracted an exciting collection of scholars, and several of the papers from that conference were published in a special issue of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education (Hatch & Wisniewski, 1990). the meetings stimulated the beginnings of an informal network of scholars interested in qualitative work in early childhood settings.
