With the current dramatic display of interest in the need for innovation in higher education on the part of government agencies, private foundations, and of higher education itself, traditional resistance to change in the American academic community has become increasingly more apparent and a greater focus of concern than ever before. Much speculation has been introduced concerning the nature of this resistance to innovation, but relatively little examination of this problem has been generated from the theoretical and research-based perspective of the behavioral sciences. Resistance to Innovation in Higher Education represents an exploration of the nature of resistance from such a perspective.

We recognize that the university as an innovation receiving system might profitably be regarded as any other institution in our culture to which innovations have been introduced. We introduce the problem of resistance to innovation in higher education by means of a concise summary of some of the various "models" in the literature that attempt to describe the diffusion of innovation that we feel may have relevance to innovation in the university.
