The purpose of this book is to acquaint the American public, for the first time, with the complete, over-all inside story of the machinations of German spies and saboteurs in this country from 1939 up to 1943. The spy menace, like the submarine menace, is a grave one still; and it is the opinion of both the author and of Government prosecutors who have been kind enough to check the manuscript for accuracy that a populace fully informed about the workings of enemy spies and saboteurs will be a populace better equipped to assist such agencies as the Federal Bureau of Investigation finally to smash The Third Reich's espionage network, still operating within our borders.

The old bromide that truth is stranger than fiction takes on new meaning when applied to the facts in Passport to Treason. Had I wished to write a fiction spy book, based on fact, I could have desired no richer source material than the cold official records placed at my disposal by various United States Attorneys.
