Excerpt

MY husband was Raymond Clapper, newspaper reporter and radio commentator. It was his privilege to witness many of the most important events that occurred in Washington and the world during the twenty-six years from 1917 to 1944 when he worked in the central city of our government. He was personally and often intimately acquainted with the personalities that the public reads about in the newspapers .

Raymond Clapper was one of those rare reporters who kept detailed notes and descriptions of these events and these important people. This book is based upon the voluminous files he left to posterity when he was killed in an airplane crash over the Marshall Islands during the Second World War. He had intended to write a book someday that would have been his honest accounting of the historical period in which he lived .

Since he was not destined to make such a contribution, this book combines his observations as written down day by day in his notes with a few of my own memories. He is the co-author .
