The writer first came in contact with Buddhism some thirty years ago. As a missionary of the American Board stationed at Foochow, China, he naturally took early opportunity to visit the great Kushan Monastery which. was located in the mountains near by. Many times afterward he visited Buddhist temples, but had no particular interest in them until five or six years ago. At that time he was deeply interested in Christian mysticism and by his readings came to have some acquaintance with Buddhist mysticism. Having opportunity at just that time to make a trip to China and Japan he took advantage of it to become better acquainted with institutional Buddhism. From that time on his interest has deepened, and he has devoted much time to its study, both historically and philosophically. In 1923, and again in 1925, he visited China, having in mind especially the very interesting work of Dr. Karl Ludvig Riechelt at his Christian-Buddhist monastery near Nanking.

In 1928, upon reviewing his knowledge of Buddhism, he felt that he had a fairly comprehensive knowledge about Buddhism, but was deficient in acquaintance with its experiential side. With this deficiency in mind he made yet another trip, to Japan, and during the eight months that followed, mostly spent in Kyoto . . .
