In the thirty years since this work was begun, I have had reason to be thankful to many people for their assistance. The late Professor R. D. O'Leary, one-time head of the English department of the University of Kansas, presented me with this subject (the University Library had just acquired a set of the Yellow Book) and supervised the writing of the original manuscript for a Master's thesis. To the memory of this fine scholar and stimulating teacher I wish here to pay tribute. Some years later, Professor J. W. Ashton, now Dean of the Graduate School at Indiana University, took an interest in the ever increasing amount of material, and I am indebted to him for several suggestions about the reshaping of the manuscript. Finally Professor C. K. Hyder, Editor of the University of Kansas Press, has given me the greatest help in preparing the book for publication, and I am grateful to him for his acute and perceptive criticism and a devotion to editorial responsibility far beyond the line of duty.

The English writers of the nineties to whom I have made reference in the Notes were exceedingly kind and patient with a young American who was brashly invading their territory, and I regret that no one of them is alive today to receive my thanks. The friends and neighbors of Henry Harland in Norwich, Connecticut, were ready and eager to talk about him, and I have most cause to remember the help of Mrs. Martha Geer, Miss Margaret Fuller, and Miss Louise C. Howe.

In the main, however, the preparation for this book was carried on in libraries, and to the unknown and now dimly recalled members of their staffs who so uncomplainingly responded to my many requests, I wish to acknowledge my debt. The institutions in which I pursued my research include the Reading Room of the British Museum, the Library of Congress, the Hamburg Bibliotek, the New York Public Library, the Boston Public Library, the Utica Free Library, the Wadswarth Athenaeum of Hartford, Connecticut, the Kansas State Historical Society at Topeka and the libraries at the following Universities:
