Excerpt

For their generous provision of the present exhibition we are indebted to sixty-nine corporations and private individuals, whose names, where they have allowed it, are included in the text. We owe to the tireless labor of Mr. Frank W. Bayley the selection of the portraits exhibited and the greater part of the biographical information from which this brief catalogue is compiled; to the kindliness of the Trestle Board the fine furniture which makes the sitters appear more at their ease in the smaller gallery of the exhibition and in the adjacent gallery containing the Museum's permanent exhibition of American portraits; and to the thoughtfulness of more than one friend of the Museum the flowers which cheer the rooms.

PHILIP HENDY, Curator, Department of Paintings.
