Excerpt

Some of the sketches in this volume have appeared in THE NATION; others have been enlarged from abbreviated comments therein; still others appear here for the first time. It is hoped that they may not only be of interest in themselves, but also because of the political philosophy, or, if that is too high-sounding a phrase, the political point of view herein developed. These studies in character are the fruits of thirty-one years of close journalistic observation of men and women in the political and social life of the United States.
