There is contained in the Great Treatise of the Book of Changes a passage in verse that goes like this:

The Changes is a book
From which one cannot hold aloof.
Its Tao
Is forever changing,
Alteration, movement without rest,
Flowing through the six empty places;
Rising and sinking without fixed law,
Firm and yielding transform each other.
They cannot be confined within a rule;
It is only change that is at work here.

The first statement of this passage is meant as an admonition; it is, however, at the same time a statement of fact. Whoever has realized what the Book has to offer, be he a philosopher, a social reformer, or a pragmatic statesman, even an empire builder, will . . .
