It was only yesterday, as time goes, that Americans reached out into the wide avenues of world production. In the main we still are buyers and sellers abroad, rather than manufacturers, and we seldom undertake to produce raw materials in foreign fields.

This book is intended to present a brief history of the little known Negro Republic of Liberia, a nation in miniature, established by freed American slaves at the western extremity of Africa more than a hundred years ago. From its inception Liberia has been regarded as a moral protectorate of the United States and throughout its troubled history has received our support and encouragement. It is the one nation in the world which may be considered an outgrowth of American institutions and its struggles to survive have had an enduring hold upon the sympathetic interest of the American people.
