What Does a Woman Want?

Synopsis

Freud's question is at the root of his discoveries about the unconscious. Serge André says that a woman wants the truth, and, in this subtle and highly original comparison of Freud and Lacan, he explains why.

Excerpt

This is an abbreviated version of a seminar I held at the Fondation Universitaire in Brussels during the year 1982- 1983.

Since the time of its initial publication in 1986, several authors have attempted to treat the same subject. None of them, however, has taken up the challenge I posed in the final chapter of this book when I offered what seems to me to be the obvious answer to the question: What does a woman want?

This answer, enigmatic though it may be, is simply the assertion of the eternal virginity of woman. This virginity, which has nothing to do with the existence of the anatomical membrane of the hymen, concerns a veil that is immaterial and yet in no way unreal, a veil placed between the woman and herself, between her identity and her body, between the speech that gives rise to her desire and the silence that preserves her jouissance.
