This book aims to give a complete survey of one of the newest, freest, most potent and democratic forces in the art of the American stage -- the Little Theatre. It describes the rise and influence of the Little Theatre in Europe and its subsequent rise in the United States.

A description of every Little Theatre in the United States that the author could find is given, including the achievements, special significance, policy, repertory, and scenic contribution of each one. Since the Little Theatre movement is a growing thing, changes in its history are constantly taking place. It is in a state of transition and can only be written of in terms of transition.

In estimating the contributions of the various Little Theatres the author has striven to be as fair as possible; but naturally, the Little Theatres that have made the most history and possess the most salient characteristics have been given the most space. If a disproportionate amount of description seems to have been given to some of the less important theatres, the critical reader is asked to remember that the amount of space apportioned was often controlled by the amount of material received, in answer to a questionnaire which was sent to such theatres as the author did not personally visit.
