Dear Gene Maura:

Your father and mother knew my parents who were of that heroic generation that tore up their roots in their old homeland, and unaided and with no equipment other than their indomitable faith and courage, built new homes in this land and raised up children who have made invaluable contributions to the life of this country in the fields of art, science, industry, education, and philanthropic work. I need not give you any list of these. It would be too long and would omit too many distinguished names. I will merely mention one friend of your grandfather's, Justice Felix Frankfurter, as representative of that second generation, who, even though themselves technically immigrants, brought here old enough to remember the Old World, still had their American careers made possible for them by the wonderful devotion of their parents. But now, even that second generation is facing its declining years. And when you grow up to young womanhood many of them will no longer be here. If you will then wish to understand the background of your splendid American-born parents and whence they sprang, you will have to read books like the following.

I have told the story of a life that cannot be said to have bubbled over with sweetness and joy. But it is a life that has had worthy moments, because actuated by efforts after things that are of perennial value, efforts which have proved sustaining in dark hours and which I think will strengthen human hearts in the future, as they have in the past.

Brief is the life of man, and of uncertain duration is his handiwork, be it ships, houses, governments or laws. But the echoes from soul to soul will go on so long as human life lasts.

Your devoted grandfather, MORRIS
