The last volume of The Lakeside Classics dealing with Indian warfare was "Army Life in Dakota" by De Trobriand. That volume, published in 1941, had been selected and edited before Pearl Harbor. This year's volume, too, another tale of Indian warfare, was selected and edited before there was any thought that long before its publication date all branches of our armed forces would be engaged in hostilities in far off Korea and before there was any thought that members of our own organization would have been called up for military service. Fortunately these events have not prevented publication of this forty-eighth volume of The Lakeside Classics.

The publishers are presenting "Absaraka" to their readers in the confident hope that this narrative of an isolated expedition of our army will hold their interest. The area in which it operated is to the west of the country in which the events described by De Trobriand took place.
