Musical Performance in the Times of Mozart and Beethoven: The Lost Tradition in Music, Part II

Excerpt

This book is concerned with musical performance in what is known as the "Viennese Classical Period". In order to show how the performing style of this period evolved, and to show the impact of Beethoven's third and last creative period on later generations of musicians, the author has had to describe briefly both the preceding style (the Style Galant) and that of the Romantic School.

This book attempts to describe some of the rules and conventions which governed musical performance in the times of Mozart and Beethoven and is a sequel to the author's previous book, The Lost Tradition in Music: Rhythm and Tempo in J. S. Bach's Time (A. & C. Black Ltd., London, and Oxford University Press, Inc., New York).

It is not expected that all the rules mentioned in this book should be applied by every modern performer, but the author believes that the knowledge of the performing conventions of the past will help greatly in understanding and carrying out the intentions of two great masters: Mozart and Beethoven.
