The French edition of Professor Lichtenberger's work appeared in the spring of 1936 under the title, L'Allemagne nouvelle. It was published by Ernest Flammarion in Paris as one of the series of works in the collection, Bibliothèque de Philosophie Scientifique. The present English version, however, is more than a translation of the French text. Professor Lichtenberger has supplied several additional sections which did not appear in the original Paris edition. The Editor has also revised the text and added numerous notes in order to bring the work up to date as well as to illuminate various problems which are of particular interest to the English-speaking reader. The footnotes added by the Editor are in all cases indicated as such.

Completely new in this edition too is the collection of documents contained in the Appendix as well as the Bibliography. Both are the work of the Editor, for which he assumes sole responsibility. The documents were chosen to illustrate some of the more important aspects of the political, social, religious and cultural phases of Nazi Germany. Attention was given particularly to documents of the kind which did not receive wide dissemination in the press and which were, therefore, not easily accessible to the English-speaking reader. In practically all cases the documents are presented in full. Only in the case of the poignant address of Ernst Wiechert on the Poet and his Times were a few sentences omitted here and there, because the allusions were peculiarly local in character and of no significance to a foreign reader. Unless otherwise indicated, the English version of these documents was prepared by the Editor.
