Excerpt

This handbook of the resources of Manchuria was prepared for American readers in 1922 in response to many requests for information concerning the opportunities for overseas trade and the facilities for travel in this ancient land of the Manchus. Continuance of such requests has made necessary this new edition, which has been revised to include more recent information.

Perhaps nowhere else in the world today is there presented so amazing a transition from primitive agricultural life to twentieth century industry and scientific organization as in Manchuria. Since the close of the Russo-Japanese War, when the policy of the Open Door was inaugurated, Manchuria has gone forward with great strides, absorbing Western ideas and developing her rich material resources.

The record of this achievement in colonial enterprise is here set forth in facts and figures, with a careful avoidance of debatable questions of international politics.

In the preparation and revision of this book, use has been made of various official and authoritative sources of information. The Economic History of Manchuria, published by the Bank of Chosen, was of particularly great assistance in the original work.
