The Idea of the Soul

Excerpt

Some years ago I wrote a book entitled Problems of the Self which Messrs. Macmillan published. My opinions, I think, remain substantially what they were; and so if it should chance that anyone wishes to see a fuller presentation of them than is set forth in the present volume, I would direct him to the larger book. In this present adventure, however, I have chosen, for the most part, to deal with different topics, and have refrained of set purpose from consulting my former essay. I hope, therefore, that I have repeated myself as little as may be; and I have learned something, I believe, from my critics and from students in the University of California, where I have spent a pleasant year in debating these topics as well as some others.
