This volume of distinguished papers and addresses is a by-product of the Golden Anniversary White House Conference on Children and Youth. While it is not an official publication of the Conference, it is the result of formal action taken by the Executive Committee of the Conference to encourage such a publication. The Executive Committee expressed the hope that a publisher could be found who would recognize the public service which would result from making available in book form a selection of some of the important papers and addresses that were prepared for the Conference.

In my capacity as Chairman of the Committee on Studies of the President's National Committee of the White House Conference I was charged to carry out this assignment. In this undertaking I had the advice and assistance of the following members of a small ad hoc committee: Dr. Philip Barba, Mr. Joseph Reid, Dr. Ruth Stout, and Dr. Ralph Tyler.

With the help of the Conference's Studies Staff, my associates and I made an initial screening of suitable materials. But the Columbia University Press made the final decisions as to the contents of this volume.

Included are six "Survey Papers," which were originally prepared for the guidance of Conference participants, and which were printed in Children and Youth in the 1960's: those by Mead, Loomis, Kagan, Axt, Lourie, and Granger.

Also included are seven "Reference Papers," which were included in a Conference publication entitled Reference Papers on Children and Youth, and which provided a probing analysis of selected themes around which the Conference's program was constructed: those by Bronfenbrenner, Clark, McFarland, Ehrmann, Patterson, Taba, and Warburton.
