Excerpt

I had never intended to write a book of memoirs, and kept no diaries-- except for one year. But I have been accustomed to make records of conversations that seemed of interest, and have preserved a number of letters received and several boxes full of political papers of various kinds. Also, for thirty years of my life I used to write to my mother, often at some length, every week when we were not together; she kept those letters, and they were returned to me after her death in 1920. So that I have, not a lack of written material to supplement memory, but an excess. There is always a temptation in books of this kind to include too much. I hope I have been ruthless enough in rejection.

I would express my gratitude to H.M. The King for kind permission to reproduce letters addressed to H.M. King George V, and the replies. I would also thank H.E. The Belgian Ambassador, Baron de Cartier de Marchienne, for permission to include my note of a conversation with H.M. King Albert; Lord Baldwin, Lord Salisbury, and others concerned in an interview at the time of the abdication of King Edward VIII, for assenting to the reference made to that interview; and the writers of the many letters that appear in these pages, or their representatives, for leave to reproduce them.

I am grateful also to several of my friends who have been good enough to read the typescript of the book and make many useful suggestions; especially Dr. G. P. Gooch, Sir Malcolm Delevingne, Professor Norman Bentwich, Mr. Roger Fulford and Mr. Frank Singleton; as well as to Lady Hartog, who read the pages on India, and others whom I have consulted on particular passages. I am indebted to Mr. C. T. Clay, the Librarian of the House of Lords, for frequent assistance; to Mrs. H. A. L. Fisher and Mr. H. M. Spielmann, for kindly reading the proofs; and above all to my wife, and to my son Edwin, for constant help and invaluable criticism.

S. January, 1945.
