Excerpt

This book was written by Professor Fisher in close association with a group of economists under the Chairmanship of Sir Geoffrey Vickers. After the theme of the book had been determined in discussion with the group, Professor Fisher prepared the syllabus, and drafted and submitted each chapter to prolonged discussion, revising and often re-writing many passages with a view to emphasizing or meeting points to which members of the group attached importance. Supplementary notes have been added which indicate some of the differences in opinion or in emphasis which have been disclosed by the group discussions. Except as disclosed by these notes, the Group is in general agreement with the book. As several members of the group are in official positions, they are unable to allow their names to be used, and the supplementary notes are also unsigned.
