Rediscovering the Bible

Excerpt

There comes a time in the life of many a maturing young person when the lines of that humorous song from Porgy and Bess suggest a possibility which is not just a laughing matter:

The things that you're liable
To read in the Bible
Ain't necessarily so.

Many of us have been brought up in Christian homes. We have been at least exposed to Sunday School teaching of one kind or another. We have seen the Bible handled with due reverence, have heard ministers preach from it, and have read parts of it or simplified stories from it. Sooner or later, however, our "faith in the Bible" is put to the test.

The transition from the precritical stage of naive acceptance to the critical stage of serious questioning is crucial, for only as we go through the struggle of "honest doubt" can the "faith of our fathers" become our faith. As someone has said, the Christian heritage cannot be passed on with the same ease as a son may inherit his father's bank account or the family estate. Each generation must go through the valley of decision. Each one of us must come to terms personally with the high calling of God in Jesus Christ. A second-hand Christianity is not worth much in times of testing when men are asked to live and die for the faith that is in them.

This book is designed primarily for young people who face this issue inescapably. No naive understanding of the Bible . . .
