Excerpt

These volumes complete my presentation of the FWP slave narrative collection. Two other collections are being prepared by others for publication. Margaret Fisher Dalrymple of the Department of Archives of Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge is preparing the Louisiana narratives. Jack Moore of the University of South Florida at Tampa is working on a collection of Florida narratives. When published, these works, along with all the volumes of The American Slave as well as Weevils in the Wheat: Interviews with Virginia Ex-slaves, edited by Charles L. Perdue, Thomas E. Barden, and Robert K. Phillips (1976), will finally make the total collection available.

The Oklahoma Historical Society papers, particularly the Foreman collection of interviews with Oklahoma Indians and Oklahoma Indian ex-slaves, should include many more narratives, but it has not been feasible to do the necessary careful work in this collection. Perhaps at some future date that will be done. However, it is likely that the Oklahoma Historical Society is preparing a microfilm edition of the entire collection, including the interviews with those who were Indian slaves. Furthermore, R. Halliburton Jr., of Northeastern Oklahoma State University has published a few of these narratives as an Appendix to his book Red over Black: Black Slavery among the Cherokee Indians (Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 1977), and he intends to use others in forthcoming works on slavery among other Indian groups. The Halliburton collection at Northeastern Oklahoma State University's John Vaughan Memorial Library contains xerox copies of the ex-slave narratives he has collected.
