The following four vignettes are meant to set the tone for this work and serve as a reminder to never underestimate a child's potential.

Many children are like Albert, who was removed from school for what today would be diagnosed as an emotional disability. He was described as withdrawn, unsociable, and as having few interests. His academic achievement was below average in all subject areas. He read intently and on creativity assessments showed some promise.

Eleanor had marginal general health and had been hospitalized with a spinal disability. She was described as withdrawn and disinterested in school. Her academic performance was average in all subject areas. She reportedly enjoyed attention and was compassionate and helpful to others.

Thomas was hearing impaired. He entered school late due to illness and was frequently absent. His IQ score was assessed at 81, his academic scores were low, and he was described as an underachiever by school officials. He was reportedly creative and enjoyed building things. When asked, he stated he would like to be a railroad mechanic or a scientist.

Like many students, Will disliked school and had a behavioral problem. Although he sometimes behaved as a humorous prankster, he occasionally damaged school property. He attended reservation school where he was classified as an average academic student. He was reportedly very creative and his interests included horse riding and roping.

These children, with a variety of special needs, overcame disabilities, low performance, and low expectations. The biographical information for each of these former students is accurate, and they managed to succeed in an era before federal protections were in place: Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, and Will Rogers.
