Chinese Landscape Painting

Excerpt

This second edition of Chinese Landscape Painting attempts to correct the errors of the out-ofprint first edition and to present a more attractive and useful appearance, particularly in quality of reproduction. While the first edition was a book-catalogue of a loan exhibition held at Cleveland in 1954, the second has been modified to include American and Canadian-owned pictures not then available as well as supplementing these with a few pictures owned abroad where nothing of their type or flavor can be seen here. This book is, then, an introduction to be used in conjunction with original works of art reasonably available for direct observation.

The author is indebted to many colleagues. More specifically, to the owners for their permission to reproduce their excellent paintings; to Dr. Richard Edwards and Dr. Wen Fong who made many of the original translations in 1954, and to Mr. Wai-kam Ho who has revised some of these and added others; to Dr. Osvald Siren and Mr. Walter Hochstadter for their photographs of the Chinese landscape; to Mr. Richard Godfrey, The Cleveland Museum of Art photographer, for many of the excellent new photographs; to Nancy Wu Stafstrom, Gretel Chapman, and Louise G. Schroeder for the onerous duties of manuscript preparation; to Dr. Merald E. Wrolstad for editing and design; and to the Trustees of The Cleveland Museum of Art whose support of the Museum's new publications program makes this second edition possible.
