This picture album, by recalling a series of scenes from the recent past and providing them with a series of introductions, an accompanying text, and detailed captions, aspires to be an aid in the study of contemporary Asia. It is designed both for Easterners who find it necessary to define their position in the world of today and for Westerners who hitherto have devoted too little attention to events outside their own part of the world.

The illustrations, more than six hundred seventyfive in all, deal with the recent history of Asia, or more exactly, with those episodes, those tendencies and movements in Asian history which might be brought together under the heading: the Awakening of Asia. In our opinion, such a limitation finds its full justification in the general conviction that that process of 'awakening' from a 'sleep' of several centuries has indeed been by far the most important characteristic of Asian history in this century. With that limitation the chronological boundaries for the book were at the same time indicated, more or less as a matter of course: with a few exceptions the reader will find in the book only pictures of phenomena, events, and persons of the twentieth century.

It is not so easy to explain what the compilers have understood by the term Awakening of Asia: in general they have meant all those developments which since around 1900 have indeed finally led to the situation as it is today.
