Money and Liberty

Excerpt

This study deals with the predicament in which the free world finds itself as a result of the moral and political threat to the money economy today. It is a sequel to my book Two Philosophies of Money, to which I refer when it is relevant. Whereas the earlier work dealt largely with conceptual issues, in the present study I examine monetary experience, in historical perspective and in relation to the political and moral problems of our time.

I wish to express my indebtedness to the Earhart Foundation for supporting my research in the United States. For valuable encouragement I wish to thank John H. Moore, William Fellner, Gottfried Haberler, and Richard A. Ware.
