Excerpt

The book reprinted here has been out of print for several years. Even though much has happened in the field of water quality management since the book was first published in 1968, the issues it raises and the analyses it supplies are as applicable today as they were almost a generation ago. The book is also the first major study of the economics of water quality management to appear anywhere, and it is still one of the most complete treatments available. In these regards it has the standing of a minor "classic." For these reasons it was decided to, once again, add it to RFF's list. Originally the book was issued only in a hardcover edition. The availability of this paperback edition permits the price to be set much lower than that of the original. The intent is to make it more accessible to students and to those who may wish to add it to their libraries for reference purposes. After its original publication in English, a German version appeared under the title Die Wassergütewirtschaft (R. Oldenbourg, München, Wien, 1971). The translation was made by Dr. Ing Hans-Jürgen Karpe.
