Excerpt

Before his death my husband had seen this book in print and had completed work on its successors, The Literary Guide and Companion to Middle England and the Literary Guide and Companion to Northern England. He did not live to see them in print, and he had not started the job he would have so enjoyed: keeping the guides current.

In updating this book for, and in a way with him, I have made no changes at all in the basic text, keeping intact all the history, anecdotes, fables, and stories told in the author's delightful original language. This edition reflects only physical and factual changes that have occurred since its last printing. Some houses and buildings, described in the earlier edition as decayed shells, have been rebuilt. Others have been destroyed. Some collections and special events have moved to new locations. Some places of literary interest that were once closed to the public have been opened. Others that were open have been closed. the insertion of these updates into the book is the only way it which it has been altered. I hope that it will continue to keep my husband's work alive and give pleasure to its readers for many years.
