Say, Is This the U.S.A

Excerpt

America today is the scene of a mighty drama, the like of which we have never before experienced. There are moments of grieving and tears, and fits of laughter and hilarity. There are hours of monotonous monologues; there are flashes of fanatical madness. But no matter what is taking place, it is like nothing else that has ever taken place before, because there is no audience to express approval or disapproval. Everyone in America today is on stage taking part.

There are times when it seems as if the scenery has become hopelessly tangled, and sometimes it seems as if the speeches have become hopelessly jumbled. But somehow, regardless, the meaning succeeds in making itself known. As the play continues, its purpose increases in clarity and intensity, even though its ultimate climax can only be guessed at.

In the meantime, there is action on top of action, there is action galore.
