This chronicle has been conceived without bias toward any faction. It is an honest effort to picture a conflict so vast that no one man could view it in its entirety or hope to describe it without loss of proportion in some aspect. I crave the mercy of those who realize the complexity of the Russian scene in this period. My account is, as the title indicates, one-sided. It does not attempt a record of the achievements and sufferings of the Red armies.

The Revolution in its profounder aspects was the judgment day, not only for a dynasty, but for a whole political, social, and economic era in Russian history. The Civil War which followed was a part of the social earthquake which shook Russia in 1917, toppling over every institution of the ancien régime and disturbing the remotest nations of the world with its tremors. Sufficient time has elapsed to allow participants to write of events as they saw and lived them. It is now possible to attempt a record of all theaters of conflict. This is the first account in any language that attempts a total picture of all the anti-Bolshevik efforts. What happened in the largest country in the world is of importance to us all.

In this labor I have been assisted by many friends. Soldiers and officers of the White armies have told their stories in restaurants, farmhouses, trains, refugee camps, railway stations, and their homes in a dozen nations of Europe, as have members of the Red armies within and without Russia. The late Colonel Michael Kostenko aided me in drawing the last draft of most of the campaign maps.
