Comparative Politics Today meets the needs of both teachers and students in introductory courses for a broader and more representative range of country studies in a single volume. It gives proper attention to advanced industrial societies, both democratic and Communist, by discussing England, France, and the U.S.S.R. at length. It analyzes the politics of Communist China, the world's most populous nation and one whose struggle for modernization will surely have important consequences for the entire world. By including Mexico, one of the most interesting Latin American nations, it adds insight to the politics of a partly industrialized nation combining democratic and authoritarian tendencies. The analysis of Tanzania introduces the complexities of the African continent, and discusses the difficulties of abandoning tribalism for modern nationhood.

Comparative Politics Today is innovative in presentation as well as in content. The first two chapters provide the student with the conceptual framework necessary to compare and evaluate the political institutions, processes, and policies of modern nations. They describe the enormous variety of nations, identify the issues confronting them, and provide ways of evaluating the strategies they adopt to solve their problems. The next five chapters introduce comparative institutional and process analysis. The topics treated include political socialization and culture, political participation and recruitment, interest groups, political parties, and policy making in governmental institutions and agencies. These discussions draw not only on the six countries studied later but also on other cases that serve to give a complete picture.

The authors have made every effort to challenge the students' intelligence and imagination while avoiding unnecessary complexity and defining difficult concepts and terms. To this end, many informative and easily read charts, tables, and maps accompany the text, and photographic sections . . .
