There does not appear to be any completely satisfactory reproduction of the Brief Description . . . and the map originally published with it. B. R. Carroll published this tract in his Historical Collections of South Carolina (2 vols., New York, 1836), II, 9-18. "The map," he explained, "that accompanied the original pamphlet, was so very incorrect, that it has been omitted in this collection" (I, iii). For this naïve method Carroll was taken to task by Justin Winsor, Narrative and Critical History of America (8 vols., Boston and New York, 1889), V, 338, who charged him with "not appreciating the fact that the incorrectness of early maps is an index of contemporary ideas, with which the historian finds it indispensable to deal." A. S. Salley, Narratives of Early Carolina, 1650-1708 (New York, 1911), pp. 65-73, took his reprint from the mapless Carroll edition and inferred that he shared his predecessor's view of the "crude and incorrect map of Carolina. . . ." Dr.Francis L. Hawks, History of North Carolina (2 vols., Fayetteville, 1857-1859), II, 37-42, reprinted the tract from a copy in his own library, but the map accompanying it was redrawn by an artist who retained the outline of the coast and rivers but sacrificed the detail which gave the map its value as an historical document. A reproduction of the same map, purporting to be a facsimile, was published in William Cullen Bryant andSydney Howard Gay's Popular History of the United States (4 vols., New York, 1876-1881), II, facing p. 284, but (notwithstanding that this had been regarded as the best reproduction) Worthington C. Ford, Early Maps of Carolina, The Geographic Review, XVI (1926), 267 . . .
