Excerpt

This volume consists of 16 full-length chapters devoted to selected topics on the behavioural pharmacology of 5-HT. To date we know of no single book aimed solely at an analysis of the state of knowledge on the functional aspects of this neurotransmitter system in the central nervous system. the chapters presented, whether main or auxilliary, discuss a wide range of behavioural characteristics that are modulated by 5-HT neurotransmission. Obviously, the reader will note that perhaps not all aspects of 5-HT and behaviour are covered, or that some are dealt with more superficially than others. in spite of the constraints inherent in an enterprise of this undertaking, the book opens exciting new approaches to the interdisciplinary study of behaviour and pharmacology with special reference to ethology, endocrinology, neuroanatomy and comparative aspects of drug action. It will be noted that much of the book is devoted to new developments in therapeutic drugs of the future. Thus, in this context it will be suitable to consider the various formal topics into which the volume is divided: Anxiety, depression, feeding, sexual behaviour, aversions, pain and drug discrimination. the auxilliary chapters adjoining each of the main chapters provide new and innovative methods or results that offer exciting and up-to-date insights into the actions of 5-HT.

The book is based largely on the proceedings of the symposium "Behavioural Pharmacology of 5-HT" held in Amsterdam in October 1987. the meeting was sponsored by several pharmaceutical companies including Astra, Beecham, Duphar B.V., Duphar Nederland B.V., Organon International B.V., Organon Nederland B.V., Sandoz Nederland, Servier, Campden Instruments Ltd., London.
