Events in Spain have delayed the appearance of a larger work on the history and archaeology of the Iberians in the first millennium B.C . which was planned during my residence in Spain from 1933 to 1936 and was in the hands of the printer in Madrid on the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936. The subject, being to a great extent unexplored, demanded a careful approach, with the fullest possible reference to sources both ancient and modern and a more detailed citation of monuments than it has been practicable to include in the present abbreviated survey. Indulgence is asked of the reader for many statements which, unsupported by quotation of their sources, may seem over-dogmatic, and my apologies are due to the scholars preceding me in this field to whose investigations it has not always been possible to render separate acknowledgement. I am under a particular obligation, as all students of the subject must be, to the labours of Pierre Paris, whose Essai sur l'Art et l'Industrie de l'Espagne Primitive, though published thirty-six years ago, remains the best illustrated corpus of Iberian art, to the untiring investigations of Professor Bosch Gimpera of Barcelona, the careful researches and persuasive reconstructions from the pen and brush of Don Juan Cabré of Madrid, the Fontes Hispaniae Antiquae and other researches of Professor Adolf Schulten, the stimulating book of Professor Rhys Carpenter on The Greeks in Spain, and the pioneer work of Sefior García y Bellido of Madrid in the field of contacts between Iberian and Greek art.
