A History of Greece

Excerpt

During the last twenty or thirty years the whole field of Greek History has been the subject of much patient and intensive research, carried on by classical scholars, excavators and archaeologists. Not merely has new light been shed upon old problems, but fresh aspects of Hellenic life, economic and social in particular, have been studied as never before. The results of such study and research have hitherto been widely scattered among various periodicals, pamphlets or monographs; but the publication of the Cambridge Ancient History has lately brought a part of them at least within the more convenient compass of a connected tale. That work, however, is not primarily intended for the reading of younger students, and its many volumes would make it, in any case, unhandy for their use. I do not feel, therefore, that any apology is needed for this attempt to retell the story of Greece in the light of our new knowledge.

In doing so I have not thought fit to overload these pages with the discussion of controversial matter, but rather I have tried to present (with such occasional caveats as uncertainty may demand) those conclusions which upon the whole appear most probable. It has been my aim, moreover, while introducing as much picturesque and illustrative detail as is permitted by the limits of my space, to keep clear the general outlines of historical developments, economic, social, artistic and intellectual no less than political or military. Two or three chapters have been devoted mainly to a description of Greek literature, Greek art, Greek religion and Greek thought. For it is after all in these no less than in political and tactical developments that the significance of Greece to the modern man resides. It seems impossible to neglect those telling anecdotes of Herodotus or those masterly descriptions of Thucydides . . .
