This volume of the Public Relations Research Annual is the first issue of what we believe will be the foremost scholarly publication in public relations. The Public Relations Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) published three issues of an experimental journal, Public Relations Research and Education (PRR&E), from 1984 to 1985. Publication of PRR&E demonstrated that public relations scholars are producing high quality academic research and that there is a need for a publication dedicated exclusively to that research. As a result, the division voted to contract with Lawrence Erlbaum Associates to publish the Annual as a stronger and permanent replacement for PRR&E.

Scholarly research on public relations has made great progress in both quantity and quality in the last 10 years, and we believe that this first volume of Public Relations Research Annual demonstrates that public relations has emerged as a strong domain within the discipline of communication. The Annual is published by the Public Relations Division of AEJMC, but it also has received the support of the Educator's Section of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the Educator Academy of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), and the Public Relations Interest Group of the International Communication Association (ICA), and the Commission on Public Relations of the Speech Communication Association (SCA). Chapters in this first volume have been presented at annual meetings of three of these organizations.
