The following essay was written under the appointment by which the author was honored, as first Ingersoll lecturer upon "The Immortality of Man," in Harvard University. The appointment was received as a fresh call to return to a subject that for many years has occupied much of the writer's thought. Since the publication, four years ago, of his book, "The Witness to Immortality," new lines of argument have been suggested; and what is here offered to the public, in accordance with the terms of the Ingersoll bequest, although standing entirely by itself and resting solely on its own merits, may be considered as supplementary to the earlier and larger work.

It must be understood that the essay is a discussion purely upon rational grounds.
