Democratic Organization for Social Change: Latin American Christian Base Communities and Literacy Campaigns

Synopsis

Van Vugt spent five years in Central America researching how local level democratic organizations operate so that previously disenfranchised members are empowered to oppose an oppressive central authority--and participate in a revolutionary reconstruction of society. He creates and then applies a model of democratic organization for social change to his findings regarding the way the literacy campaigns and Christian Based communities were organized in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Brazil. This study is valuable not only as an example of a scientific methodology for cultivating democratic organization for social change, but as an attempt to clarify the controversy over the role of the specific campaigns and organizations studied.
