I began work on this book rather a long time ago, and over the years I have incurred a number of debts. The editors of History and Social History have permitted me to use and revise material which originally appeared in those journals. Friends Historical Library, Dublin, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Mount School, York, kindly supplied me with xeroxes of much-needed material. Joan Law of the University of Auckland Library has been extremely helpful in procuring microfilms from overseas. And of course none of my research would have been possible without the support provided by the various institutions which have sheltered me over the years: the University of Adelaide, Balliol College, Hartley College of Advanced Education, and my present home the University of Auckland.

But I have two great debts. The first is to my family, Athina . . .
