Excerpt

In offering to the public this new edition of Samuel Hearne's classic account of his explorations, I wish to thank my sister, Miss Elizabeth Glover, for kindly searching the naval archives in the Public Record Office for me; in doing so, she uncovered new facts about the explorer and corrected or confirmed a number of statements made about him. Likewise, I wish to thank my friend, Mr. Erik Chitty, for the pains he took to provide me with copies of the wills of Hearne and his father, and of his correspondence and contract with his publisher, preserved in the Strahan Papers in the British Museum. I acknowledge with gratitude the kindness of the Governor and Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company in permitting me to research in their archives; and my thanks are specially due to their archivist, Miss Alice Johnson, for much help given me there. My debt to J. B. Tyrrell's pioneer work in the edition of this book which he prepared for publication in 1911 will be obvious to all who know that edition and is gratefully acknowledged.
