The writing of this book became necessary for me during a week spent in South Vietnam with a group of Americans sent by the Fellowship of Reconciliation to investigate the state of religious and political freedom in that tragic land. I discovered in Saigon that the Catholics of South Vietnam, because of their fear of communism, are solidly in favor of the war. Their attitude was similar to that of many if not most American Catholics who have favored a hard line against communism -- even by the use of war, if necessary.

The appalling and agonizing tragedies so omnipresent in Vietnam caused me to realize with acute pain that neither the Holy See nor the American bishops have given any of us strong leadership or guidance on one of the most awful events of our age -- a war which has taken the lives of over one million persons, which has caused the dislocation of ev-
