Excerpt

Each of the chapters in this volume was originally prepared to be delivered, in one form or another, as a public lecture. They were presented to audiences at the University of Nebraska, at the Elizabethan Club of Yale, at the University of Cincinnati, at the University of Leicester, and at the International Shakespeare Conference, or the School of Elizabethan Studies, both at Stratfordupon-Avon. Though no chapter appears in its original form, all of them envisage an attentive audience, not isolated scholars: the examples are deliberately selected as familiar, not obscure ones; the documentation is minimal; and the style is more colloquial than precise.
