One of my purposes in writing this book was to show something of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the man -- a side that the public saw very rarely. Even in his own books he chose not to deal to any great extent with his own human side. In this book I hope I have succeeded in showing a different Adam Powell, whom very few people, except for relatives and his closest personal friends, saw. I have attempted to show Adam Powell, the man, from a variety of perspectives -- how people in Harlem and Bimini saw him; how the average man in the street saw him; how people who knew him for many years and who worked closely with him remembered him.
