If a book could speak, the preface would probably be the logical place for it to do so. But since it can not, perhaps the author may be permitted in this spot to perform the task of presumptive autobiography.

"Revolt in the Arts" had its birth in the general recognition of a state of revolution in our contemporary American theatre during the past season. Realization that all of the arts have a common fountain-head in the human imagination and that whatever profoundly influences one of them is likely to affect the others, dictated a survey to discover whether revolt was present, incipient or impending in the cinema, in music, in the dance, in literature, in painting and sculpture, in architecture, in the craft arts. The result of this survey pointed to a chaotic condition in all of the arts comparable in many ways to the overt revolt in the theatre, a condition which has assumed in the intervening months an increasingly revolutionary aspect.

Originally conceived simply as a coordinated symposium on the subject by typical workers in the several arts, the book suddenly enlisted the author's own interpretive interest when he detected unmistakable trends and feasible goals emerging from the general chaos. These trends and these goals might have intrinsic interest and significance besides serving as a pattern to assure coordination of the reports of the contributors.

Hence, instead of a mere field-survey, "Revolt in the Arts" became an attempt to analyze the multiple forces at work in the . . .
