Excerpt

Even a rather small handbook of German literary authors of the three decades from 1945 to 1975 lists over 350 names and several thousand stories, plays, novels, essays and volumes of poetry. Until the ravages of time and continued literary scholarship have eroded away less-durable portions of that mass and exposed any monumental peaks contained within, it may be impossible for critics to attempt anything like a definitive study of postwar German literature. Still, there are cracks and crevices in the landscape, points of entry into the terra incognita, so to speak, including those test holes bored and trenches hacked out by scholars interested in individual authors, works and subjects. This book is an attempt to descend into such fissures and to follow five thematic red threads through the postwar German literary labyrinth.
