Handbook to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland

Excerpt

This is the first attempt at producing a handbook covering all three Territories, Southern and Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, that together form the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

The three Territories are at different stages of development in economic, political and social spheres and this unevenness is inevitably reflected here and there in this handbook. It has been possible to deal with some subjects on a Federal-wide basis but many have had to be divided into three Territorial parts. It follows that treatment of the same subject often appears to be unbalanced. It may not be regarded with the same importance in all three Territories, it may be at a higher or lower or different stage of development or, as in the case, for example, of commercial fishing or mining, the basic factors may be absent in one or other of the Territories.

Many of the chapters form original contributions by experts on subjects that have not before been dealt with on a Federal basis. Such are the chapters on Pre-history, History, the African People and others. All the chapters have been compiled from authoritative sources and some of the composite ones, such as that on the Churches, are also first attempts at dealing with the subject on a Federal-wide basis.

Certain chapters and sections that are the contribution of an individual rather than a compilation by a department or organization, carry the name of the author.

The greatest problem of a work of this kind is that of where to stop. There must be many aspects of life in the Federation that have not been dealt with in this book, and their absence does not imply a complete lack of importance but merely of space.

W. V. BRELSFORD, Director of Information.
