The title of this book was selected only after long deliberation. Still, Renewing Organizations falls far short of revealing the precise goals of this book. Some such title as Toward Continuous Renewal for Organizations and Individuals captures more of its flavor. Certainly the thrust suggested by the key word "toward" is appropriate, but even that may suggest too much; that is to say, the alternative title implies more than can presently be delivered. We are but a little way down the road of understanding what continuous renewal implies, for individuals or for organizations. And although we are beginning to see a little more daylight about how one goes about accomplishing "continuous renewal" for individuals and organizations, now is definitely not the time to rest on those tentative laurels.

Better the pedestrian if less revealing title, then, providing that the full scope of this volume is made clear. This book deals with how individuals and organizations can go about making more effective choices, as well as coping better with change if that is what we choose or have thrust on us. The technology is new and only beginning to develop, and there is a very real doubt as to whether what we know is already far too little, far too late. But we still must try, even if only the attempt is possible, even if change is our contemporary Armageddon. Alvin Toffler put the necessity in perspective in his discussion of "future shock," the "shattering stress and disorientation that we induce in individuals by subjecting them to too much change in too short a time." He came away from his research "with two disturbing convictions":
