Excerpt

The preparation of this book has involved twenty years of research and numerous journeys to the Mediterranean for field work, in the course of which I visited nearly all parts of the coasts and their immediate hinterland.

My thanks are due to Dr. Wallace W. Atwood for his unfailing encouragement and help in securing me leisure for research in the midst of my professorial activities at Clark University; to my good friend Dick Mack of San Francisco, who took me on long motor trips through Greece, Corfu, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and with generous interest planned the tours with reference to my purposes rather than his own preferences; to my brother-in-law Francis B. Keene of Rome and my nieces Emerin and Carolyn Keene, who enabled me to explore by motor little-known parts of Italy, thus contributing to that intimate knowledge of the country invaluable to a geographer; to Professor Clarence F. Jones of Clark University, for his careful supervision of the maps while they were being prepared for this volume.

Finally I wish to express my lasting gratitude to Dr. Ruth E. Baugh, Assistant Professor of geography at the University of California in Los Angeles, for her intelligent, efficient and devoted service in helping me put this book through press, at a time when illness compelled me to delegate a large part of the task to another. This service, for which her knowledge of Mediterranean geography equipped her in a peculiar degree, can never be sufficiently repaid.

ELLEN CHURCHILL SEMPLE.
